It’s About the Music

Music at North Tahoe is a rich and varied program. The Tahoe Sierra Century helps to fund new music, instruments, festivals and honor bands, and scholarships. With help from the riders and the many sponsors, the TSC has raised between $25,000 – $30,000 annually for many years to support music education.

Concert Bands

North Tahoe Middle School hosts a vigorous band program. Students in grades 6-8 have band every day and over 70% of the students in the school participate. Thanks to the TSC and other grant programs. we can offer every beginning band student a (nearly) free instrument in the 6th grade, and many into later grades as well. By the time these students reach High School, they are ready to master complex, sophisticated music. The High School supports two concert bands with about 25% of the student body participating. In other parts of California, 5% participation is about average.

The Symphonic Band is the 9th-10th grade band. The juniors and seniors play in the Wind Ensemble. Band at all levels adds a great dimension to the well rounded education at North Tahoe High School.

The Jazz Program

In North Tahoe, jazz music starts in Middle School and extends to two bands at the High School level. Jazz students also play in the concert bands and sometimes get to school at 6:30 in the morning for the privilege. The dedication pays off though which TSC riders get to experience. All three jazz bands play at the after-ride concert.

The kids play everything from swing tunes of the 40s to more recent charts. This crowd liked early Elvis!

The North Tahoe Jazz Band offers a Good Will tour every spring, bringing music to senior centers, elementary schools, and centers for the developmentally disabled or the blind.

 Festivals and Honor Bands

North Tahoe students audition for honor bands in California Region V, Capital, or in other parts of the state. The Concert Bands and Jazz Bands also participate in festivals with guest conductors and judges. These experiences allow students to play more challenging music, learn to refine their sound, and grow as musicians. But look at their smiles – they’re having fun too!

Honor bands bring together musicians from around the state to showcase their talents.
